Texas Must Hold Date
Texas requires teens between the ages of 15-17 to hold their learner's licence (permit) for a minimum of six months (180 days) before being eligible for a provisional license. The date, which is referred to as the must hold date, is printed on the back of the permit.
To be eligible to get your provisional license after the holding period, the following criteria must be met:
1. Be at least 16 years old.
2. Complete an approved driver's education program such as this one.
3. Finish the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) program within 90 days of your skills test.
4. Pass the driving skills test at the DPS or with an approved Third Party Tester.
It is important to note that your permit will expire on your eighteenth birthday if not upgraded sooner.
